Author: Harney, John Milton

Biography:

Harney, John Milton (1789-1825: WBIS)

His life and adventures attract a good deal of romantic embellishment by biographers but the facts appear to be that he was born to Thomas and Margaret (Hudson) Harney in Sussex County DE, trained as a doctor, and established a practice in Bardstown KY. He married Eliza Cooper Rowan and they had at least one child, but his wife died young. Leaving the family behind, Harney took himself to New York and embarked as ship's surgeon on a privateer bound for Buenos Aires, but when the crew mutinied off the coast of Georgia, he went ashore and lived for some years in Savannah as a newspaper editor. He then returned to Bardstown and joined a Roman Catholic monastic order. After his death, a few more of his poems were published in magazines. (Appleton; ancestry.com 23 Fab. 2019; L. U.
