Biography:
HANSON, Joseph (fl 1806)
Apart from his long poem celebrating the American naval victory in the War of Tripoli (1801-5), very little reliable information is available for this author. The date and place of publication make it possible that he was the Joseph Hanson born in Dover NH on 12 Mar 1783, son of Elizabeth and John B. Hanson, who became a physician in New York. There must have been a family connection to Cambridge MA because his birth at Dover was registered there. He died at home at 107 Oxford St., Brooklyn, on 16 Jan. 1858, and was buried at Mount Auburn cemetery, Cambridge. He is not the Joseph G. Hanson who married Rosetta Cornwell in New York on 24 April. 1835: that couple appears in the 1860 census. (ancestry.com 7 Sept. 2025; findmypast.com 7 Sept. 2025) HJ
