Biography:
HALL, Sarah Ewing (1761-1830: WBIS)
Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of John and Hannah (Sergeant) Ewing. Her father was Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1782 she married John Hall of Maryland; they lived on his farm until 1790, when he became secretary of the Pennsylvania land office and they returned to Philadelphia. They had ten children, eight of whom survived infancy. Sarah Hall began publishing essays anonymously or under the pseudonyms "Constantia" and "Florepha"; in 1801 she contributed to the first volume of Joseph Dennie's Port Folio, and after Dennie's death the Hall family took it over, four of the sons as well as their mother being involved as publisher, editor, or contributor. The Selections edited by Harrison Hall and published after her death include some verse. (Appleton; ANBO 19 Feb. 2019) HJ
