Biography:

HAKE, Henry (1803-88: ancestry.com), pseudonym Monachus

The son of Thomas and Mary (Keeling) Hake, he was baptised at St. Pancras Old Church, London, on 6 Oct. 1803. No records have been found of his qualifications--education or ordination--but he must have been ordained. In 1829 as the Rev. Henry Hake he became a stipendiary curate at Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and stayed there as vicar until his retirement in the late 1850s, at which time he settled in Leamington. (He was briefly also curate at Astley, Lancs., in 1832.) He married twice: first Fanny Hill (sic, b 1808) at Chilvers Coton on 8 Nov. 1831, and then, as a widower, Frances Elizabeth Best (b c. 1830), at Leamington in 1862. The first marriage produced no children but there were three from the second. His only other known work is a pamphlet on baptism (1836), published under his proper name rather than the pseudonym "Monachus" ("Monk"). He died at Leamington in Dec. 1888 and was buried at All Saints, Chilvers Coton. (ancestry.com 21 Dec. 2021; findmypast.com 21 Dec. 2021; CCEd 21 Dec. 2021)
