Biography:

Haines, Hiram (1802-41: ancestry.com)

He was born to a farming family in Delamore Forest, Culpeper County VA, but by the early 1820s he had moved to Petersburg VA to work in publishing and journalism. In 1825 he married Mary Ann Currie Philpotts of Richmond VA, who had been a childhood friend of Edgar Allan Poe. Haines established a hotel and coffee house, Hiram Haines' Coffee House, where Poe is believed to have spent his honeymoon in 1826--and which is still in operation. He became the editor of magazines, the American Constellation and the Virginia Star, to which he also contributed under the pseudonym "The Stranger." His title-page indicates that he was a Freemason. The Haineses had four children and are both buried in Petersburg. (Jeffrey Abugel, Edgar Allan Poe's Petersburg [2013] ch. 5; Knight; ancestry.com 18 Feb. 2019)
