Author: Haight, Sarah
Biography:
Haight, Sarah, formerly Rogers (fl 1822-1846)
She published anonymously as "a lady of New-York." It is surprising that there is so little on record about her dates and background, since she was privileged and well connected. Her husband was Richard Kip Haight (1798-1862), a merchant and traveller, president of the Oriental Society of New York. They had at least one daughter. Although the Preface to her Medley (1822) describes her suffering under a "distressing malady," in later years she accompanied her husband to Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Asia Minor, and Turkey--travels that she wrote about in Letters from the Old World (1840) and Over the Ocean (1846).
