Biography:
HAGGITT, John (c. 1761-1843: findmypast.com)
One of at least three sons of William Haggitt, gentleman, of Scarborough and Ipswich, and his wife Mary Staple, he was born on 8 Sept. 1761 and baptised on 6 Oct. at Scarborough, Yorkshire. He was educated at Harrow and Clare College, Cambridge (matric 1780, BA 1783, MA 1786, BD 1796). At first Fellow of Clare Hall, he followed his elder brother George into the church (ordained deacon 1789, priest 1790) and held several livings in Cambridgeshire, the most important of them being Madingley, where he was Vicar from 1796 to 1804, and Fen Ditton, where he was Rector from 1804 until his death. On 30 Oct. 1810 he married Frances Peyton at Kingscote, Glocs.; they had two daughters. Besides his one tragedy, which appeared anonymously, he published a little on theological issues and, as FSA, on Gothic architecture. He died at Fen Ditton on 1 Jul. 1843 and is buried there; his wife lived on until 1854 and died at Eaton Place in London. (findmypast.com 15 Dec. 2021; CCEd 15 Dec. 2021; ACAD; contributions by AA) HJ
