Biography:

GUY, J. (fl 1797)

His first name is not known and it has not yet been possible to identify this poet and song-writer with any certainty. His book attracted a modest number of subscribers, including Charles James Fox (1749-1806) for whom one of the poems, “Celebration of Liberty,” was written. Another Whig politician, Lord John Townsend (1757-1833), is the subject of two poems, and the book includes a poem about the trial of Thomas Paine (q.v.). Two London booksellers, W. Trippass and T. Handcock, were subscribers. According to the title page two of the songs were performed at Vauxhall by the well-known singers and actors Charles Incledon and Margaret Martyr. Nothing more has been found.
