Author: Guthry, John

Biography:

GUTHRY, John (fl 1776-1818)

Internal evidence provides the only reliable information discovered about Guthry, who at the time of publication of his written work (1815-18) was living in Augusta County PA and styling himself "senior"--so presumably he was married with a son of the same name. (There is no longer an Augusta County in PA: the division of Augusta County VA into two parts, one of which became West Augusta VA and the other Washington County PA with its capital in Augusta Town, was still disputed.)  In both his books, he addresses political issues as a "democratic republican" speaking for his own class, the class of mechanics and farmers. His credentials include military service against the indians and a term with the New Jersey militia during the Revolutionary War. A John Guthry born in PA c. 1792 appears in the 1850 census as a farmer in VA but no further trace has been found of John Guthry Sr. (ancestry.com 6 Sept. 2025; findmypast.com 6 Sept. 2025) HJ
