Biography:

GUINNESS, Jane Mary Lucretia, formerly D’ESTERRE, formerly CRAMER (1797-1868: ancestry.co.uk)

She was born in Kent, near Woolwich, to Maria (Madden) and William Cramer, a violinist and composer. She was baptised in Marylebone on 1 Apr. 1798. Nothing is known of her early life before her marriage to John Norcott D’Esterre in Dublin in 1812. They had one daughter. D’Esterre served on the Dublin Corporation and took exception to comments by Daniel O’Connell about the Corporation. The two men fought a duel in Co. Kildare; D’Esterre’s shot fell short but he was wounded in the hip and died a few days later in Feb. 1815. On 5 Jan. 1829 she married a widower, Captain John Grattan Guinness (d 3 Mar. 1850); they had one daughter and three sons, including Henry Grattan Guinness (a missionary; see his entry in the ODNB). Her one book of verse, Sacred Portraiture, was published as by Mrs John G. Guinness. They lived at Dublin, Liverpool, Clifton, and Cheltenham. After Captain Guinness’s death in 1850, she remained in Cheltenham at 1 Wellington Square. However, she died at Cheadle, Lancashire, on 15 Sept. 1868 and was buried at St. Mary's, Cheltenham, with her husband. She is listed in various census records as “proprietor of houses” but she left an estate of under £50.
