Author: Griffith, Richard

Biography:

GRIFFITH, Richard (fl 1793-1804)

O’Donoghue identifies this author as possibly Richard Griffith, son of Richard Griffith (d 1788) and his wife Elizabeth (Griffith) Griffith (d 1793). Richard senior and Elizabeth were both successful writers and she was a talented actor. Their son, Richard, was born in Dublin on 10 June 1752. He made his fortune in India, became a member of the Irish parliament, and died in 1820. However, his birth year of 1752 does not fit with information on the title page of Kirk-Leas which states that the poem was written in 1760. Possibly the Richard Griffith whose works are listed in this bibliography had no connection with Ireland but, on present information, he remains unidentified. He also published Providence; or, the Two Sparrows (London, 1804) but at eight pages it is too short to be included in this bibliography.
