Biography:

GRIEVES, Jacob (1732-1814: ancestry.co.uk)

Jacob Grieves or Grieve was the son of Jacob Grieve and was baptised on 20 Mar. 1732 in Stannington, Northumberland. He became a collier, living in Benton Moor, Northumberland, and working in the Benton colliery. On 26 May 1760 he married Alice Todd (born in Mitford, Northumberland, on 1 Sept. 1736) in Stannington. They had several children of whom at least one, Ellison (b 1761), was baptised in a non-conformist chapel. Although he published a number of books, Grieves left few other traces of his life. Alice may have predeceased him; there is a record of a marriage between Mary Kirkup (b 1754) and Jacob Grieves in Stannington on 12 May 1780. Grieves died in 1814 and was buried on 3 Aug. in the churchyard at St. Bartholomew’s church, Longbenton, Northumberland. (ancestry.co.uk 20 Nov. 2024; findmypast.co.uk 20 Nov. 2024) SR
