Biography:
GRAY, Robert (1796-1844: ancestry.co.uk)
He was born in Yetholm and styled himself “the Yetholm poet.” Likely his parents were Robert and Margaret Gray and he was baptised in Yetholm on 21 Feb. 1796 but nothing more is known about his early life. James Raine gives a lively account of Robert Gray’s eccentric appearance, itinerant life, and willingness to recite his poetry in broad Scotch dialect for a fee. Raine states that he died in the workhouse at Wooler, Northumberland. (Graeme Watson, ed., Selected Poems of Robert Gray, the Yetholm Poet [2016]; James Raine, A Memoir of the Rev. John Hodgson 2: 41-42 [1858]; ancestry.co.uk 29 July 2019) SR
