Author: Gray, John

Biography:

GRAY, John (fl 1778)

No biographical information that can be linked to this author with certainty has been located. He was evidently highly educated, and it is possible he was the John Gray who served as rector of Marischal College, Aberdeen, from 1764 to 1768. That John Gray is said to have previously lived in Aberdeen but at the time of the rectorship was living on King Street, Covent Garden, London. With a donation of £1000, he established two mathematical bursaries at the college. Allibone lists him as the author also of Poems (London, 1770) but that book has not been traced. (Allibone; General Report of the Commissioners under the Universities (Scotland) Act [1863])
