Biography:
GRANT, Joseph (1805-35: ODNB)
The son of Robert Grant and Isabel (Falconer) Grant, he was born at the family farm at Affrosk, Kincardineshire. His summers were spent working on the farm and his winters at the village school. He began to write poetry at an early age. In 1831 he commenced working in a shop in Stonehaven before moving to Dundee where he worked first for the Dundee Guardian and then as an assistant to a Writer to the Signet (solicitor). He contributed tales to Chamber’s Edinburgh Journal. A sudden lung infection sent him home to his parents’ farm where he died. At the time, he was preparing Tales of the Glens with Ballads and Songs for publication; it was issued in 1836 with the addition of a memoir of Grant written by Robert Nicoll (q.v.). He was buried in the churchyard of Strachan, Kincardineshire. (MSM; ODNB 16 July 2019; ancestry.co.uk 16 July 2019).
