Politician. He was born at Bengal to Charles Grant, a director of the East India Company, and Jane (Fraser) Grant. His mother’s family came from Inverness and his paternal grandfather was a Jacobite soldier. He spent his early life in India, from 1795 was at Magdalene College, Cambridge, was called to the bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1807, and entered Parliament for Inverness in 1811.
