Biography:
GRAHAM, John (1776-1844: DIB)
Clergyman and writer. He was born in Co. Fermanagh or Co. Longford, Ireland, the son of James Graham. In 1794 he entered Trinity College Dublin, and graduated BA in 1798 and MA in 1815. While a student, he became a member of the Orange Society and of the Trinity yeomanry. In 1798 he went to Killala to be ordained but instead joined a troop of dragoons and was present at the Battle of Ballinamuck against the French. The following year, he became a curate at Kilrush, Co. Clare, where he met and married Elizabeth Johnston; they were to have eight children. He was installed as the rector at Tamlaghtard, Co. Londonderry, in 1824. Graham’s historical and poetical writings reflect his strong support of the protestant cause in Ireland. He is buried in Tamlaghtard churchyard. (DIB 30 Jan. 2019)
