GRAHAM, Charles (fl 1778-90)
The title page of Graham’s 1778 Miscellaneous Pieces identifies the author as “of Penrith [Cumberland].” By the time of the 1790 edition, he was a “writing-master and Teacher of the English Language” in Liverpool, Lancashire. No biographical information has been located but it is possible he was the Charles Graham, schoolteacher, who was born in about 1743 and died in Liverpool on 15 May 1800. That Charles Graham was buried in a Quaker cemetery on 18 May. The first edition of Miscellaneous Pieces attracted a considerable number of subscribers. It includes two poems on the death of the author’s infant son. The preface to the enlarged second edition ends with a curious note accusing John Stagg (q.v.) of copying Graham’s 1778 preface for one of Stagg’s own books. Some parts of the two prefaces are similar but they are not identical. (ancestry.co.uk 15 Oct. 2024)
