Biography:
GRAHAM, Charles Vincent (fl 1835)
Although there were numerous Charles Grahams living in London whose dates would plausibly fit with the author of Heads or Tails; a Poetical Epistle, no records for a Charles Vincent Graham have been found. Given the political nature of the poem, it is possible that the name is a pseudonym. The introduction states that the author was on his way from the gallery of the House of Commons to the Athenaeum club in Pall Mall when the idea for the poem came to him; the poem was supposedly written in haste at the club over dinner. The probable date of composition is early Apr. 1835 when Sir Robert Peel’s minority government collapsed. SR
