Biography:
GOULD, Hannah Flagg (1789-1865: WBIS)
Born in Lancaster MA, she moved with the family to Newburyport in 1808 and stayed for the rest of her life, keeping house for her father in his later years. Her father, Benjamin Gould (1751-1841), had been a soldier who fought at the Battle of Lexington; he and his wife Griselda Apthorp (Flagg) Gould had at least five children. Hannah Gould began contributing poems to magazines in her thirties but her first volume of collected poems was arranged by admiring friends. It went through several editions, being expanded to two volumes in 1836 and to three in 1841. For its simplicity and domesticity it was compared with the work of Wordsworth. Eight more books appeared between 1843 and 1863. Gould published some juvenile fiction and contributed frequently to magazines, anthologies, and annuals, but is best known for the poetry which remained in demand through her lifetime.
