Biography:

GORDON, John (1792-1819: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 9 July 1792 (baptised 24 July) at Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, the son of a surgeon, James Gordon, and Mary (McKenzie) Gordon. He studied at the universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh before being admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1813 when he began working as his father’s assistant. He married Isobel Robertson on 21 Feb 1816 at Keith. Gordon drowned while swimming in the river Isla in 1819; his friends issued Elgiva by subscription to benefit his widow and children. (Curiously, on 23 Apr. 1817 his assistants had been convicted of stealing the body of one John Bremner from Keith churchyard.)
