Biography:

Goldsmith, Oliver, the younger (1794-1861: WBIS)

The grand-nephew of Oliver Goldsmith (q.v.). His one long poem offers a colonial response to his ancestor's Deserted Village and has always existed in its shadow. He was the son of Henry Goldsmith, the first assistant commissary general in Halifax NS, and his wife Mary (Mason) Goldsmith. Goldsmith the younger, who was born in St Andrews NB, spent his entire adult life as a civil servant in the British army commissariat but travelled widely for his job, with postings including Halifax, New Brunswick, Hong Kong, Newfoundland, and Corfu. He never married and spent his retirement after 1855 living with his sister in Liverpool, where he died. (DCB 11 Jan. 2019)
