Biography:

GLOVER, Richard (1712-85: ODNB)

Although a prior author, two of his works were issued posthumously and are included in the database. He was born at London to Richard Glover, a merchant, and his wife Mary West. He studied at Cheam School before starting work in his father’s business. He was politically active and allied to a group of “Patriots” who were opposed to Robert Walpole and supported Frederick, Prince of Wales. His Leonidas was issued in nine books in 1737 and widely praised; he became known as “Leonidas.” In the same year, he married Hannah Nunn but, although they had two sons, the marriage was not a happy one and ended in divorce in 1756. Glover married again; his second wife’s first name was Eleanor but no other details are known. He had a daughter, Mary, outside of marriage; she inherited his papers on his death and arranged for the publication of The Atheniad (1787). Glover was a successful playwright particularly with Boadica (1753) and less so with Medea (1761). He served as MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis 1761-68. He died at home in Albemarle Street, London. His memoirs were published in 1813. (ODNB 8 Mar. 2021; ancestry.co.uk 8 Mar. 2021)
