Biography:

GIBSON, William (1745-1821: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised on 24 May 1745 at St. Margaret’s, Lowestoft, Norfolk, the son of Richard Gibson and his  wife Deborah Night, who had married at Winterton in 1736. He went to Pembroke College Cambridge (Matric. 1764, BA 1767, MA 1771, Fellow 1777) and won the Seatonian Prize in 1772 and 1781 with poems listed here. He entered the church and was ordained deacon in 1767 and priest in 1769. He was Curate of Wymondham, Norfolk (1767-9), Rector of Winterton (1769-1821), and Rector of Colney (1789-1821). He was also prebendary at Lincoln Cathedral from 1789. He was elected FSA in 1784. He died 29 July 1821 at Colney parsonage. He never married and left an array of bequests to relatives, friends and institutions. He published one further work after his prize poems, Elidure and Ella (1805), a romantic tale set in Snowdonia.
