Author: Gibson, H. S.
Biography:
GIBSON, H. S. (fl 1834-5)
A resident of Philadelphia with a large circle of well-wishers who subscribed to both of his volumes of poetry, he seems to have given up literature after 1835. The preface to The Vision of War suggests that some of the weaknesses of the composition arose from his not having enough money to pay for corrections because he had used up his advance getting publication underway. The Philadelphia census of 1840 includes an H. S. Gibson living by himself as a "free white male" of 40-49, born therefore between 1791 and 1800. (ancestry.com 3 Jan. 2019) HJ
