Biography:
GENIN, Thomas Hedges (1796-1868: Hollis)
He was born in Aquebogue NY, the only child of John Nicholas Genin, a Frenchman, and his second wife Sarah Hedges. His father--presumably Jean Nicolas Génin originally--had arrived in America in 1780 at the age of 25 with the French army sent to support Washington in the War of Independence. His mother died in 1799 and his father in 1810. Genin was then taken in by an uncle, Judge William Woodhull of Chester NJ. He studied law and was called to the bar in New York in 1816. In the same year, he married Ann Hillard; they moved soon after to St. Clairsville OH, where Genin was appointed a Master in Chancery and where he spent the rest of his life. The couple had three sons, but Genin outlived all the family and was to write a biography of the middle son, Sylvester. He became a wealthy and influential citizen of the town, his early and primary, lifelong commitment being to the cause of the abolition of slavery, in which he was a close ally of Benjamin Lundy.
