GAULD, Harry (1793-1873: ancestry.co.uk)
Postmaster, watchmaker, teacher. He was born on 8 Nov. 1793 at Castlehill, Auchindoir (Aberdeenshire) to James Gauld and Elizabeth (Gordon) Gauld. He trained as a watchmaker and moved to Muir of Rhynie sometime before the 1828 publication of his book of poems. On 17 Sept. 1829 he married Mary Ross; they had one daughter but BBA states that the couple subsequently became estranged. Beginning in 1841, census entries record Gauld as living alone. He became postmaster at Lumsden where he lived a frugal and sociable life; he was known both for his eccentricities and for his genial kindness to others. He died on 11 Dec. 1873 and was buried in Auchindoir Old Kirkyard. (BBA; ancestry.co.uk 7 Jan. 2019, 14 Jan. 2025) SR
