Author: Gardiner, Susan H.

Biography:

Gardiner, Susan H. (fl 1810-30)

Although she published as S. H. Gardiner or as Susan H. Gardiner of Darby PA, she was probably baptised Susannah. Her first published work was an edition of the spiritual journal of her late husband, William Gardiner, a physician, for the years 1807-12. (He died about 1813 but the journal did not appear until 1819.) The preface to that work is signed "S. G." and the publisher is identified as Susannah Gardiner; in the text, Gardiner refers to his wife as Susannah. There is some evidence that her maiden name was Humphreys, and that they were Quakers. There were at least two children. The preface to The Basket of Fragments describes the author as a widow with children to support, and defends the originality of the poems in The Village Rambler.
