Biography:

GALL, James (1784-1874: SBTI)

The son of James Gall and his wife, Mary (Jack), he was born at Edinburgh, probably in about Feb. 1784 but no record has been located. He became a notable Edinburgh printer and publisher and his firm, under various names, existed from 1808 into the twentieth century. On a visit to Paris, he saw examples of books for the blind and was motivated to develop a system for printing educational books to be used by the Edinburgh Blind Asylum. In 1805 he married Ann Collie (d 1847); they had three daughters. Census records show the family living at Myrtle Bank, York Road, Trinity in Leith, and it was there that Gall died on 3 Nov. 1874. The only edition of Doctrines in Rhyme that has been found is the fourteenth. (SBTI; ancestry.co.uk 6 May 2020, 14 Jan. 20-25; Belfast Newsletter 5 Nov. 1874) SR
