Biography:

GALE, William (b 1804: ancestry.co.uk)

The Advertisement to The Death of Abel describes the poem as “the first production of a youth” but Gale does not seem to have published any other books. He was the eldest of the five children of John and Elizabeth Gale who were baptised at Butt Lane Independent Chapel. William was baptised on 2 Sept. 1806 and his birth date is given in the record as 16 Nov. 1804. The family lived in Stowage, Deptford. An elder brother, Josiah, was baptised in the established church of St. Nicholas, Deptford, on 7 Nov. 1802. Josiah’s baptismal record identifies John Gale as a gardener. No other records have been located and nothing more is known. (ancestry.co.uk 24 Aug. 2024; findmypast.co.uk 24 Aug. 2024) SR
