GAITES, Benjamin (fl 1820)
This author does not seem to have published any books other than A Basket of Wild Flowers. He may have been the Benjamin Gaites, a master wig maker in Bath, Somerset, who is recorded as taking an apprentice in 1784 but more likely that man was the author’s father. A Benjamin Gaites married Harriett Ettell (b 1774) in Bath on 4 Aug. 1799; they had at least six children. Benjamin Gaites, “hair dresser” of Weston near Bath, was listed as an insolvent debtor in 1829. The spelling “Gaites” is unusual and it is possible that his birth record, which has not been found, uses a variant spelling of the name.
