Biography:
GAGGIN, James (fl 1808)
Although the subscription list to Poems on Creation includes very few place names and no other Gaggins, it is possible that this author originally came from Cork, Ireland. A James Gaggin of Cork contributed a poem to the Lady’s Monthly Museum in 1817. Gaggin is also a surname common to Yorkshire but no convincing matches have been found for this author in the public records. Two of the poems in his book are addressed to his brother John, who saw action at Trafalgar with the Royal Navy. The preface makes the usual claims of being urged to publish by friends and refers to the author’s unspecified “laborious profession.” As the title indicates, many of the poems are religious.
