FRANKLIN, S. (fl 1818)
The only clue to the identity of the author of this elegy for Princess Charlotte in 1818 is the fact that the poem is dated from Stroud's Hill, Gloucestershire, and published locally in Stroud and Cheltenham. Inference from internal evidence suggests an inexperienced female author with no foreign or classical languages but of an economic class able to pay the costs of printing. There do not appear to have been other publications. A surprising number of Sarah Franklins were born in or about Stroud between 1785 and 1797 but none has been linked to the Stroud's Hill address.
