Author: Foster, William C.

Biography:

FOSTER, William C. (fl 1798-1805)

pseudonym Timothy Spectacles

The Preface to his only known published volume is dated from Waterford NY. In it, he describes himself as a workman who "never received the advantage of an education, whose University has been a work-shop, and whose chief study a mechanical art." This collection of his occasional verses, he says, omits the more political ones in "the spirit of '98"--which suggests that he might have been an Irish immigrant or at least a sympathizer with the Irish Rebellion of that year. One of the patriotic songs in this book made its way into The American Song Book (1842). No further information has been found about him. HJ
