Author: Fordyce, James

Biography:

Fordyce, James (fl 1787-89)

Scottish Notes and Queries claims he was a schoolmaster in the parish of Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, and the preface to the first edition of his Collection of Hymns is dated from Pennan, a village in the parish. However, no other biographical information has been located. The preface to the second edition is dated from Edinburgh. He is to be distinguished from James Fordyce, DD, (q.v.) who was born in Aberdeen but lived in London in the 1780s. There is a lengthy subscription list with names drawn mostly from Aberdeenshire.
