Author: Fitzgerald, G.

Biography:

FITZGERALD, G. (fl 1773-6)

Bedlam, a Poem (1776) was published in London anonymously but is attributed to "G. Fitzgerald" by the BL, apparently on the basis of a rare issue that includes a title-page naming the author and identifying him as the author of Liberty Recovered (1773). The earlier work was also published anonymously and in London. Nevertheless, the author was an Oxford man who appealed for subscribers there on 29 May 1773, thanking "various respectable Characters at Magdalen, Christ-Church, and Wadham Colleges . . . and other Gentlemen residing in Oxford" for donations already received and promising speedy publication at Oxford with just a few more. It is not clear whether or not the appeal was successful but it is unlikely: the names of the Oxford printers specified in the appeal do not appear in the London publication, and neither of the copies examined contains a list of subscribers. G. Fitzgerald's name is not included in Alumni Oxonienses, and no other information has come to light about him. (ESTC; Oxford Journal 29 May 1773)
