Author: Ferguson, Thomas

Biography:

FERGUSON, Thomas (fl 1823)

"Thomas Ferguson" is not an uncommon name in the Tyneside area where the author of Gothalbert of the Tyne was active. The satire was published in North Shields and Bishop-Wearmouth (now Bishopwearmouth, part of Sunderland, Co. Durham); it ridicules the earlier Gothalbert and Hisanna (1822) of Robert Gilchrist, q.v. At the time of publication the author was living at Vine Place, Bishopwearmouth. He might have been the child of that name born to Thomas and Elizabeth Ferguson who was baptised in Sunderland on 1 Jun. 1803. He was very probably the resident of the town who married Margaret Chambers in their parish church of St. Peter, Bishopwearmouth on 12 Nov. 1822. There was a Thomas Ferguson living at nearby Gateshead with a wife Margaret and two young sons in 1841 but if he was our author he died at Gateshead and was buried on 13 Oct. 1851 at the age of 49. He does not appear to have published anything further in either verse or prose.
