FENNER, David (1783-1868: findmypast.com)
The son of James and Sarah (Winchester) Fenner, he was born at Warbleton, Sussex, on 28 Nov. 1783 and baptised on 27 Dec. In 1809 he married Susannah Harmer in Heathfield, Sussex; they went on to have at least five children who grew to adulthood, including one son, also David, who succeeded his father as pastor in Hastings. He began as a preacher for the Particular Baptists at the Providence and Cow Lodge Chapels in Hastings about 1812 but about 1815 he led a secession movement. After a period in temporary quarters his group built a new chapel, the Ebenezer Chapel (named for the road it was on) opened in 1817 which grew, was enlarged, and closed its doors only in 1998. Besides the early Hymns he published many sermons and tracts in Battle and Hastings. He died in Hastings on 22 Jul. 1868 and was buried on 30 Jul.
