Author: Fennell, Mr.

Biography:

FENNELL, Mr., Jun. (fl 1818)

Fennell identifies himself on the title-page of his only publication as "Mr. Fennell, Jr., late of London, now of Aldborough [Aldeburgh]." Not much more is known of him. The book is dedicated to the Rev. H. C. Canne, MA, Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford--of whom not a trace has been found. Since Fennell does not parade a BA or MA degree or any other qualification, it is unlikely that he was a graduate. But a contemporary note in ms in the British Library copy affirms that the author was "a near relation" to Mr. Fennell, Merchant, of Aldeburgh, and observes that he must be either crazy or silly because the book is such "incoherent stuff." The merchant would be Robert Fennell, who sold his business Osborne and Fennell, coal and corn handlers at Snape Bridge, to Newson Garrett in 1842; Garrett developed the premises to specialize in malt, and Snape Maltings prospered.
