Biography:

FAUGERES, Margaretta Van Wyck, formerly Bleecker (1771-1801:WBIS)

Born in New York City to John J. and Ann Eliza (Schuyler) Bleecker (q.v.), she spent her childhood in Tomhanick, a village north of Albany NY. Their family life was disrupted by war in 1777; they fled, several of them died, and her father was captured. Her traumatised mother died in 1783. A decade later, Margaretta edited her mother's posthumous works, adding a few compositions of her own. On Bastille Day, 14 July 1792, against her father's wishes, she married Peter Faugeres, a French Jacobin physician, who was abusive and who squandered the family fortune. After his death in 1798, she became a teacher to support herself and their two daughters. She died in Brooklyn. (Griswold; Wikipedia 29 Nov. 2018; Mainiero) HJ
