Biography:

FARRER, John (1776-1838: findmypast.com)

Farrer is not an uncommon name in the north of England. Even the village of Netherwitton, Northumberland, where the author of Poetical Works (1831) was baptised and buried, had more than its share of John Farrers, including the clergyman (1735-1808) who was a schoolmaster at Witton-le-Wear and the subject of a Memoir by his nephew John Farrer (1758/9-1820, q.v.). Our author was the son of Isabel (Amery) and John Farrer, who had married in 1773. In 1805 he married Isabel Heppel of Kirkwhelpington; they had at least one son, who died young. Farrer’s occupation is not known, but his mostly occasional poems celebrate local events ("On the Netherwitton Manufactory") and personalities of the vicinity ("The Blyth Doctor"); some are in dialect, after the model of Burns.
