Author: Farquhar, William
Biography:
FARQUHAR, William (b c. 1772)
There is little reliable information about this poet. The preface to his Poems on Several Occasions states that he publishes not from vanity or desire of praise but from “a laudable wish of endeavouring to do justice to some claims on him, which he had no other means of satisfying.” The book was published by subscription but there is no list; it is dedicated to Sir James Stirling and the Edinburgh Volunteers. One poem refers to his former intention to open a circulating library at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire; “Epistle X” explains that his business failed and he moved to Edinburgh where he became printer’s devil to John Moir (another poem is addressed to Moir). His birth year is conjectured from a reference in one of the poems. (SBTI 3 Dec. 2018) SR
