Author: Ewing, Harriet

Biography:

EWING, Harriet (1781-58: ancestry.co.uk)

The author signed Dunrie (1819) from “King’s End" and dedicated it to Lady Denny. Elizabeth Denny (c.1775-1828) was the wife of Sir Edward Denny of Tralee Castle, co. Kerry, and King’s End House, Powick, Worcestershire. She further noted that Lady Denny was “a Friend whom I love and respect” and that she lived “within the sphere of your affection, and [feel] all the influence of your domestic virtues.” It would be tempting to suggest she was a governess in the household or perhaps a lady’s companion but the easy familiarity of the dedication would seem to preclude this. One candidate might be Harriet Ewing, baptised 24 Jan. 1781 at Bath Abbey, the daughter of James and Mary Ewing. Her father may have been the brewer who ran the Angel Inn in Westgate Street, Bath, in the 1780s. She was listed in the 1841 Census as living at Springfield Place, Walcot, Bath, with her sisters Mary and Anne. All three sisters never married. She died, aged 76, on 26 Feb. 1858 at Cambray, Cheltenham, and was buried at St. Mary’s on 5 Mar., leaving an estate of under £2000. The above account is plausible but no more than that and lacks corroboration linking the Harriet Ewing born at Bath in 1781 to the woman who published at Bath in 1819.
