Biography:
EVERETT, Alexander Hill (1790-1847: WBIS)
He was born in Boston, one of the eight children of the Rev. Oliver Everett and Lucy (Hill) Everett. After graduating from Harvard in 1806--top of his class though the youngest member of it--he taught briefly at Phillips College (Exeter) and then studied law in the office of John Quincy Adams. Through his connection with Adams he embarked on a diplomatic career, filling various posts in Russia, the Netherlands, and Spain. From 1830 to 1835 he followed his brother Edward (q.v.) as editor of the North American Review, to which he had been and continued to be a major contributor. He went as commissioner to China in 1845 and died there, in Macao. Besides translations and literary criticism on American and European subjects, he published extensively on international politics and economics. (Appleton) HJ
