Biography:
EVANS, Thomas (fl 1821)
The Wreath of the Brave is a mock-heroic poem about boxing that capitalises on the success of Pierce Egan’s (q.v.) Boxiana (1812). Published by Sherwood, Neely and Jones, its wide circulation suggests that Evans was likely a known entity as an author if not as a poet. However, it has not been possible to identify him with any certainty. In 1815 Sherwood published Walks Through Wales by Thomas Evans (approximate dates 1766-1833) of Radnorshire, Wales, but there is no evidence for that author writing verse—or, indeed, for the Thomas Evans who wrote The Wreath of the Brave living in Wales.
