Biography:
EVANS, Lewis (fl 1830-42)
Evans seems to have published just two books—the one included in this bibliography, The Pleasures of Benevolence, which was issued anonymously in 1830 and Zaida; a Tale of Granada, and Minor Poems (1842) to which he put his name. The dedication in Zaida to Sargeant Thomas Talfourd (q.v.) and the subscription list indicate that he was well-connected among professional, educated men. However, the poems give away very little about his personal life and it has not been possible to identify him with any certainty. The preface to Zaida states that his verses were written “after the daily duties of an arduous profession” and it is possible that the author was one of several men with this name who worked as a surgeon in London at this time.
