Estlack, Restore (d 1808: ancestry)
There is some mystery attached to the publication of his only book, Ethick Diversions (1807). The Preface is signed and dated from Woodstown CT (where a man of that name, apparently a Quaker, died and was buried in 1808) but the copyright is assigned to Lewis B. Jansen of New York City. In his preface, the author writes about trying the book out on a friend or two before resolving to publish. Jansen was associated with the New York bookseller and publisher T. B. Jansen, who was presumably a brother, and the two of them were in business together as publishers on Broadway by 1808. It seems very likely that Estlack simply asked Jansen to handle the process of publication for him. In some bibliographies and catalogues, however--even in one scholarly article--Jansen is presumed to have been the author and Estlack a pseudonym. (ancestry.com 19 June 2019; WorldCat; S&W) HJ
