ENGLISH, James Russell (fl 1830-33)
No biographical information has been located. His book is dedicated to the Marchioness of Donegal. In 1830-34 he contributed numerous poems to the Belfast Newsletter as “Colin.’ On 30 July 1830 the newspaper published a notice seeking subscriptions to A Visit to the Muse and claimed that knowledge of his circumstances would heighten interest in the book. One of his poems, published in the Belfast Newsletter on 20 Dec. 1833, hints at his approaching death from consumption—perhaps a poetic conceit or perhaps the truth given that there are no poems from “Colin” after 10 Jan. 1834.
