ENGLES, William Morrison (1797-1867: WBIS)
The son of Silas and Annie (Patterson) Engles, he was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1815. He went on to study theology, was licensed to preach in 1818, and spent two years as a missionary in Wyoming before returning to Philadelphia to become pastor of the Seventh Presbyterian Church there. In 1834 he resigned his position on account of ill health, but he continued to work for his church as editor of The Presbyterian and (from 1838) as editor of the books and tracts published by the Presbyterian Board of Publication. He also contributed some works to the series and became President of the Board in 1863. In 1836 he married Charlotte Schott (c 1808-88); no record of children has been discovered.
