EMERSON, J. (fl 1652)
Poetical Descriptions of Orkney was issued by James Maidment in an edition of thirty copies, based on a manuscript in the Advocates’ Library, Edinburgh (a penciled note in the UCLA copy states that the manuscript has since been lost.) Maidment derives the author’s name from an appendix to the manuscript. The poems are hostile descriptions of Orkney (Maidment calls them “coarse but clever”) evidently written by a member of Cromwell’s occupying army. The first poem is dated “From My cave the Otter's Hole, in the third month of my banisment [sic] from Christendome, September 9, 1652.” SR
